In response to the fertilizer plant explosion in West, Texas, Governor Rick Perry declared the county of McLennan an official disaster.  See the actual proclamation here.  The declaration suspends any rules and regulations that may inhibit a proper and prompt response to the disaster area.  In addition, it authorizes any necessary measures, both public and private, to aid in disaster relief.

Texas Task Forces have been assigned to the disaster and are assisting other rescuers in West to search for any victims still trapped in the rubble.  The Texas National Guard is also conducting search and rescue.  Details of the two Task Forces that have been assigned to the area:

Texas Task Force 1:

  • Made up of 540 members
  • Members are from 68 different emergency departments around Texas
  • Headquartered in College Station, Texas
  • Most deployed urban search and rescue team in the United States

Texas Task Force 2:

  • Based in Dallas
  • Made up of more than 200 members
  • Sponsored by the Dallas Fire-Rescue Department

President Obama has also contacted Governor Perry and offered federal resources as well.
