Explosion at Fertilizer Plant in West, Texas

On April 17, 2013, a massive fertilizer plant explosion devastated the small town of West, Texas. West, Texas is located 75 miles south of Dallas and 120 miles north of Austin. It is a small community of less than 2,000 people, covering less than two square miles. In a flash, the lives of hundreds of West residents have been changed.

The incident began as a fire and culminated in a massive explosion shortly before 8 pm. An unknown number of people were killed, ranging conservatively from 5 to 15, but possibly as many as 70. Hundreds have been injured as well, including firefighters who responded to the initial blaze. Many are still missing or unaccounted for.
