On September 21, 2013, the 40th Annual Granite State Wheelman Tri-State Seacoast Century Ride took place. The famous bicycle race follows the coasts of New Hampshire, Massachusetts, and Maine. But tragically this year, shortly after the race began, a car traveling south on the route crossed over onto the northbound side, striking four people. Two female cyclists were killed, while two more were injured.
Authorities are conducting investigations and can not say if charges will be filed against the driver.
Even the safest cyclists can end up in tragic accidents such as this one. Accidents are much more likely to occur when motorists do not recognize that cyclists have just as much of a right to use the roadway as cars do. However, with their bodies fully exposed, cyclists are most likely to be seriously injured in these tragic situations. What can you do to keep yourself safe on the road?
