Police: Shaking causes baby’s traumatic brain injury

Police in Florida are investigating a man who reportedly shook or struck an 11-month-old baby so hard that the child suffered from blood clots and seizures.

Such tragic news and the possible long term effects of such abuse make up the types of cases that personal injury attorneys at Kirkendall Dwyer LLP handle on a regular basis. It can be tough for the family to know what to do or who to turn to for help.

Regarding the 11-month-old’s case, a 31-year-old man was arrested in March on suspicion that he physically abusing his girlfriend’s daughter while he was alone with her for about 15 minutes while the child’s mother went into a store, according to media reports. When the baby’s mother came back to the car, the baby was asleep. But when the little girl woke up some time later, the mother said the child had trouble focusing when her name was called and kept “drifting off.”

The mother was clearly able to recognize that something was wrong and took her daughter to the hospital, where the baby was diagnosed with a traumatic brain injury. Doctors said the baby needed surgery after suffering a blood clot on the right side of her brain and internal bleeding.

What the mother recognized was a seizure as the baby’s right arm started to shake and she couldn’t keep her right eye open, media reports said. The mother passed a lie detector test while the suspect refused to take one.

There are many types of accidents or injuries can lead to a serious brain injury that will need treatment. If you or someone you love has had a brain injury that was caused by someone else’s actions or negligence, you should give the attorneys at Kirkendall Dwyer LLP a call at 877-503-1595.
